What do I like about Grand Lake Gardens?
Carole Jan Lee
What do I like about Grand Lake Gardens? I like the way residents and staff treat each other like family. The terrific menu choices, beautiful dining area and friendly dinner companions are a plus. Our sixth floor dining room with views of the Oakland hills is unmatched. And I enjoy the fact that somebody else cooks and washes the dishes and takes care of housekeeping.
And there’s so much to do here … I can’t imagine how anyone could not enjoy it! Whether you like going to parties, attending lectures and seminars, participating in exercise classes, stepping out on the town … whatever you like, you can do it here. And if you want company, you’ll find plenty of nice neighbors who share your interests.
As for me, I grow vegetables in our organic garden for a local agency that provides lunches for seniors, participate in a book club, attend musical theater classes, play the piano for vespers, serve on committees, explore the Bay Area arts and entertainment scene, and more.
I enjoy the active and rewarding lifestyle at Grand Lake Gardens, and I’m glad I moved here while I can still appreciate every second of it. Come check it out for yourself. I think you’ll really like what you see. Everyone is so warm and welcoming at Grand Lake Gardens!
Before retirement, I worked in the health care field, specializing in geriatrics.
Before retirement, I worked in the health care field, specializing in geriatrics. Over the years, I learned a thing or two about what we need as we grow older; strong connections with family and friends and people you can count on; optimism and enthusiasm; an enduring passion for living; and the ways and means to stay healthy and fit for as long as possible.
I’ve found all that and more at Grand Lake Gardens. Some of my interests include photography, pottery, exercise, poker games, a play reading group and classical music performances. And if I want somebody to join me in any of these activities, they’re easy to find. Not only that, but everyone on the staff is caring, efficient and friendly.
I think this is a great place to live, and I encourage you to seriously consider it for yourself. Come have a meal or two in our dining room. Meet some of the people. Explore all there is to see and do here. And see for yourself what a nice place this would be to live – today and all the years ahead.
Ed, a retired priest, and Katie, a former educator, moved to Grand Lake Gardens in 2005.

Katie: My mother lived at Grand Lake Gardens for 18 happy years. We visited her many times and got acquainted with the community. The people are wonderful. Everyone has a story to tell about their lives. The intimate size of the community allows us to eat together, socialize and get to know each other on a more personal level. I love getting together with my knitting group and gardening in the resident gardens. It feels like being around family.
Ed: Grand Lake Gardens is perfect when maintaining your home and yard become a burden, but while you’re still active. Since moving here, I’ve resumed (after decades) playing my trumpet and recorder. Before that, I didn’t have the time to do the things I really enjoyed. Residents are honest-to-goodness, caring human beings – it’s nice to be in that environment every day.
I moved to Grand Lake Gardens in 2011 because of its unique homelike quality.
I moved to Grand Lake Gardens in 2011 because of its unique homelike quality. It’s intimate, without feeling small. It could easily be mistaken for an upscale resort. Moving here is an opportunity to expand the mind, refresh the soul, pamper the body and nourish the spirit. It embodies what a retirement lifestyle should be. I love to garden, travel, cook, drive fast cars and watch beautiful sunsets – it’s all possible here.
Team members constantly strive to carry out and fulfill the goals and mission of Grand Lake Gardens’ parent organization, ABHOW. Each employee is thoughtful and caring, and puts their heart and passion into their work every day. It’s just a wonderful community.
Moving here was the best decision I ever made.
Moving here was the best decision I ever made. I love the location – it’s within walking distance of everything I could ever want, including Lake Merritt, which I walk once a week with a group of friends. I have the freedom to continue to do things like quilting, genealogy, attending the opera and making jewelry. And it’s such a joy to be able to enjoy a meal every day with the amazing view from the community’s dining room.
Don’t wait to move here. I was able to do it on my own terms while I’m still active and able to take advantage of all the opportunities of the community and the neighborhood. I recommend you do the same.
I only see beautiful at Grand Lake Gardens.
“I only see beautiful at Grand Lake Gardens, the view of the Zen Garden from my balcony is wonderful! It was the people that first attracted me to Grand Lake Gardens. The residents are welcoming, they make you feel at home immediately. And the staff is so kind.”
